Fishing is one of the most popular outdoor activities, and understandably! Nothing beats sitting by the water, enjoying the sun, and waiting for the best catch. If you’re embarking on your first-ever fishing experience during a campervan adventure, there are a few things to note. Equip yourself with essential tips and tricks to ensure a rewarding and responsible fishing escapade.

Before You Go:

Regardless of your location, getting a fishing license is imperative. This can be easily done online for a small fee. Getting a license is important because it will ensure you are not fined, but it also supports wildlife conservation and education. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service offers comprehensive information on fishing licenses and requirements for each state.

Gear To Get:

Like any outdoor recreational activity, fishing requires its own specific gear. We recommend going to the local fishing supply store to get all your supplies. Know The Rules:

Prior to setting out on your campervan fishing expedition, understand the guidelines for safe and proper fishing. These are the best practices to remember:

• Know the state restrictions. Every state has its own set of guidelines and rules you must follow when fishing recreationally, and it’s important you know what they are. Explore state-by-state rules and regulations here. 
• Adopt a ‘catch-and-release approach as a rule of thumb for recreational fishing. This practice safeguards natural habitats and ensures sustainable fish populations. The National Park Service provides great resources for proper catch and release techniques. (Note: Deep sea fishing requires a different catch and release protocol.)  
• Opt for fishing during conditions conducive to the well-being of fish. Avoid low water levels, low water flow, and high water temperatures that can induce stress among aquatic life.

Where To Fish

There is great fishing in every state, but these are the best spots in our four locations:

Colorado

• Gunnison County: Renowned for picturesque vistas and tranquil waters, Gunnison County is an angler’s heaven. The stunning mountain backdrop enhances the fishing experience. Plus, it holds the records for the largest brown and rainbow fish. 

• Glenwood Springs: Along with its famed hot springs, there is also exceptional fishing! Glenwood is known for its fly fishing, which is a more challenging style, but they still offer a lot for novices. Spring and fall are great times to explore Glenwood, but fishing is great all year round here!

• Lake City: A year-round fishing destination encompassing fly, shoreline, and ice fishing. Every season invites the pursuit of diverse fish species.

Utah

• Ashley National Forest: Offering diverse fishing options, you have the chance to catch ribbon fish and anglers. There are all types of fishing available, so you can go for the challenge or just enjoy sitting next to the water. 

• Logan: Lying within the beauty of Logan is Bear Lake State Park, the second-largest freshwater lake in the US. This is a great spot to enjoy a variety of water activities, especially fishing. The area is also known for having the best raspberries. Enjoy a raspberry shake while you sit by the water. 

• Ogden: This destination of beauty holds rivers to enjoy a morning of fly fishing. You can go upstream for smaller rainbows, cutthroats, and brookies. Downstream you will find bigger fish like savvy browns.

Nevada

• Lake Mead: Spanning over 290 square miles of water to explore, Lake Mead has a multitude of fish species to catch. You can find catfish, sunfish, and bass here. 

• Mono County: Brimming with captivating lakes, Mono County’s Topaz Lake stands as a popular fishing locale. This lake sits on the border of California and Nevada, giving you the opportunity to visit two states in one go.

• Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest: Whether you are looking for streams or ponds, Humboldt-Toiyabe is the perfect place. There are plenty of picnic spots and trailheads that will take you to the best fishing. 

Arizona

• Tonto National Forest: Tonto has two iconic fishing destinations, Canyon Lake and Saguaro Lake. These spots are great for catching a variety of fish. These are not the only spots within Tonto to enjoy fishing. You can also explore Bartlett Reservoir. 

• Glendale: This spot is a great family destination. It has plenty of playground space and great fishing for beginners. Since this is a pond, there are restrictions on how many catches you can make in a day. 

• Gilbert: Right outside of the town of Phoenix is Gilbert, which contains several ponds to enjoy fishing. There are many lakes and ponds in the Phoenix area that are great for family outings and days by the water.
