Welcome to Mile-High City, the gateway to the majestic Rocky Mountains. Denver provides access to some of the country’s finest outdoor adventure spaces ranging from Rocky Mountain National Park, historic Mesa Verde, the stunning Maroon Bells, and some of the US’s tallest peaks. Below you will find a quick guide to find things like grocery stores, liquor stores, restaurants, bars, experiences, and outdoor stores before you head out on your Colorado adventure.
Local Campgrounds
Free camping spots are few and far between in the Denver Metro Area, however, there are plenty of robust private and public campgrounds that make for a great night stay on the front or back end of your trip.
Denver West / Central City KOA Holiday
605 Lake Gulch Rd, Co Rd 6, Central City, CO 80427
Denver West/Central City KOA is an amenity-rich campsite, located at an elevation of 8,490 feet, one mile above Central City and Black Hawk, and just 35 miles west of Denver! Also, located within minutes of the best Colorado casinos, it’s an excellent base camp for day trips to Red Rocks Amphitheater, Coors Brewery, Denver Zoo, Elitch Gardens Amusement Park, Estes Park, and Colorado Springs. Rates run from $40-$60/night. One thing to note, the campground is only open May – Oct.
Chatfield State Park

Chatfield State Park is a conveniently located state park in the Denver Metro Area, just 30 minutes south of our office. The park has almost 200 camping sites, all having picnic tables, grills and even a children’s playground. Amenities include vault toilets, showers, a laundry facility and firewood available for purchase. Summertime is the best time of year to visit the park, so you can relax on the beach, swim in the lake or rent a boat to enjoy a casual day under the sun.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park
92 Crawford Gulch Rd, Golden, CO 80403
Golden Gate Canyon State Park is a hidden gem, just 30 miles west of Denver in the foothills with over 40 miles of hiking and nature trails. Reverend’s Ridge is the amenity-rich campground of the park providing flush toilets, an ice machine, a laundry facility and even coin operated showers. Aspen Meadows is a more primitive option with only vault toilets and picnic tables. Both sites also have fire pits. Reservations are suggested as locals flock to cooler elevation during the summer months, so head over to cpwshop.com to lock it in. Sites range from $20-$40/night plus the $10 park entrance fee.

Natural Grocers

Natural Grocers is Denver’s neighborhood organic grocer offering everything from organic produce to free-range eggs and an extensive selection of supplements. You can fully stock up on your van trip here, knowing everything you buy is sustainably sourced and organic. You can also find a host of jerky, nutrition bars, seeds/nuts, chips, and all other unique, Colorado snacks to grab.
King Soopers
2810 Quebec St, Denver, CO 80207
King Soopers is a chain grocery store under the Kroger Brand. your standard big-box grocery store offering everything you need in preparation for your van life adventure. It is the cheapest and best bang for your buck and some of the locations have gas stations as well as outdoor equipment. You can find them all over the Denver area.
Trader Joe’s
750 N Colorado Blvd, Denver, CO 80206
Trader Joe’s is a west coast boutique grocery store. They have a variety of items ranging from meats, fresh produce, and other fun products that you will not find anywhere else. Denver has four locations all in different areas of the city. Depending on which way you are driving you can find one.
Whole Foods
Denver has multiple Whole Food locations throughout the city. Depending on which direction you are going they are close to the freeways. They specialize in organic foods, organic health care products, and brands that you won’t find in traditional stores. If you are heading west on I-70, there is one located right off the freeway in the Denver West Area.
Liquor Stores
Alcohol is available in abundance around the state of Colorado, especially craft beer which the Rocky Mountain State is well known for. Liquor is able to be sold between 8am and midnight and beer sold between 5am and midnight 7 days a week.
Argonaut Wine & Liquor
Denver’s longstanding liquor stores offer a massive variety of wine, spirits, and beer in a warehouse setting, specializing in providing the best selection of craft beer in the city. Open 7 days a week from 8 am – 11 pm, the friendly staff is a great resource to ask for recommendations if you are unsure.
Total Wine and More
Total Wine is a West Coast liquor superstore that has an extensive upscale liquor and fine wine offering. If you are looking for a unique bottle of something to celebrate a special occasion Total Wine is the spot to go. You can also order ahead, so you have a seamless pickup and are off on your way to the mountains.

Denver Central Market

Your one-stop shop for all appetites. This gourmet marketplace and food hall houses a variety of local vendors, including a bakery, coffee shop, fish market, butcher, rotisserie, chocolate shop, ice cream, wood-fired pizza, salad, and sandwiches. They also have an outstanding bar.

Denver BBQ at its finest. Smok features house-smoked meats, share plates, creative sides, and sauces. A perfect pre or post-trip meal!

A breakfast staple of Denver. Snooze A.M. Eatery turns the breakfast & brunch restaurant experience into a party, serving the best craveable food. Be sure not to skip out on their seasonal pancakes. It’s breakfast but different!

A local favorite of our Denver team. Not only is the coffee and savory items delicious, but Prodigy Coffeehouse also acts as an apprenticeship, training youth on the margin in NE Denver.

The Holy Grail of premium outdoor stores. A must stop of any local our out-of-towner, REI Denver provides outdoor enthusiasts with top-brand gear & clothing for camping, climbing, cycling, fitness, hiking, paddling, skiing, snowboarding, and more. Be prepared to spend lots of time and money here!

Go local! FERAL is an indie outdoor store with one of the city’s largest selections of used outdoor gear and apparel. They also offer rentals and gear repair. Stop by and stock up before your adventure.
Wilderness Exchange

Wilderness Exchange is an independently owned business that buys and sells equipment (at a far cheaper cost than REI). If you’re in pursuits such as climbing, backpacking, mountaineering, and backcountry skiing, and snow travel, be sure to head there before you depart on your trip.
